Dental emergencies

In the event of a dental emergency, immediately contact our office and schedule an appointment. Describe your emergency in detail in order to obtain instant advice before your scheduled appointment. Quick treatment improves chances of saving injured or damaged teeth.

The most common dental emergencies along with first course of action to mitigate further discomfort and damage are as follows:

Toothache: It can be alleviated through over-the-counter painkillers, however, avoid contact between the pills and the sore tooth. Holding an ice pack on your face in the general proximity of the pain will further help to control the discomfort.

Chipped or Broken Teeth: Tooth damage that falls under these two categories can be restored under most circumstances. In the event of a small break, a white filling will be utilized to repair the damage. If the damage is severe, often root canal in needed to restore the break with a possible installation of a crown.

Knocked-Out Teeth: A “knocked out” tooth may still be replanted due to the technological breakthroughs in the field of dentistry. One must act quickly since if the tooth is put back in within a half hour of the injury it has a reasonable chance of taking tooth again, however the odds greatly diminish after 2 hours. Gently rinse, but do not scrub the tooth to remove dirt or debris, place the tooth in your mouth between the cheek and gum, if it is not possible to store the tooth in the mouth of the injured person, wrap the tooth in a clean cloth or gauze and immerse in milk. Get to the dental office as soon as possible.

Lost Filling: To protect the exposed area for a short period of time place a piece of soften sugar-free gum on it. Visit our office at the earliest opportunity.

Something Stuck Between Teeth: Never poke between teeth with a hard sharp pointy object, since this is likely to result in cut gums, exposing your inner tissue to infections, as well as scratched tooth surface. If the attempt to get the object out with a dental floss fails, please book an appointment at our office as soon as possible.
